Ovens punish guesswork more than most appliances. “It will not heat” describes at least six different failures across gas and electric, and half of them look the same from the front of the machine. A gas oven that will not light might have a dead igniter, a closed safety valve, or a control board that never called for heat. Swapping the igniter because it is the usual suspect works often enough to be a tempting habit, and expensive when it is wrong.
We test the circuit before we condemn the part. On gas equipment we also test after, every time, because a gas appliance that leaves our hands has to be safe as well as working.

Gas Ovens and Ranges: Igniters, Valves, and Burner Ignition
Gas ovens do not use a spark to light the oven burner. They use a glow bar igniter, and the igniter does two jobs at once. It heats until it glows, and the current it draws is what opens the gas safety valve. That design matters, because it explains the most common gas oven failure we see.
A weak igniter still glows. It looks fine. It just no longer draws enough current to open the valve, so gas never reaches the burner. Homeowners see an orange glow and assume the igniter is good and the problem is elsewhere. It is not. A glowing igniter that does not light the burner within about 90 seconds is a failing igniter.
Other gas issues we handle:
- Surface burner will not light while the others do. Usually a clogged burner port, a wet or cracked spark electrode, or a burner cap seated crooked. Those are usually cheap fixes.
- All surface burners click but none light. That points to the spark module or the switch harness, not the burners.
- Burners that keep clicking after lighting. Moisture or spilled food around the electrode is the usual cause.
- Yellow or lazy flames instead of steady blue. This can mean an air shutter out of adjustment or an orifice problem. It is worth a look, because incomplete combustion is a safety issue, not just a cooking one.
- Gas smell. Do not troubleshoot this one. Leave the house, then call your gas utility from outside.
Every gas repair we complete ends with a leak check on the connections we opened and a verification that the burner lights and holds. That is not an upsell step. It is the last step.
Electric Ovens and Ranges: Elements, Cooktops, and Uneven Heat
Electric ovens fail differently. There is no valve and no ignition sequence. There is a bake element in the floor of the cavity, a broil element in the roof, and in many models a convection element behind the rear fan cover.
A bake element that has burned through usually shows it. Look for a blister, a split, or a bright spot where the sheath has opened. When one fails, the oven often still “works” in a way that confuses people: broil heats fine, bake does nothing, so the top of a casserole browns while the middle stays cold. The reverse happens when the broil element goes.
An element that looks perfect can still be dead. Elements fail open internally with no visible damage, which is why we meter them instead of eyeballing them. We also check the terminal block behind the element, because a burned terminal is a common cause and replacing the element alone just burns the new one.
Cooktop and stovetop elements
On a coil-top range, a burner that will not heat is usually the coil itself, the receptacle it plugs into, or the infinite switch that controls it. Receptacles burn out from spills and heat, and a burned receptacle will destroy a brand new coil.
Smooth-top and radiant ranges bring different problems. A burner stuck on high, or one that cycles oddly, generally means a failed infinite switch rather than the element. Cracked glass tops need replacement rather than repair, because a cracked surface is a shock and spill hazard.
Induction cooktops are their own category. The heat comes from a magnetic field and the control electronics underneath, so failures usually sit in the power board, the coil, or the cooling fan. An induction unit shutting itself off mid-cook is often overheating because the fan or the vent path is blocked, not failing outright.
Control Boards, Temperature Calibration, and Self-Clean Lockout
When the oven is off by 25 or 50 degrees
Baking that goes wrong at the edges is usually calibration, not a broken part. Ovens drift as they age. The temperature sensor, a small probe in the oven cavity, changes resistance as it heats, and the control board reads that resistance to decide when to fire. A sensor that drifts gives the board bad information, and the board obediently runs the oven at the wrong temperature.
Most ovens can be recalibrated through the control panel, often by 35 degrees in either direction. That is a real fix when the sensor is still good. When the sensor has drifted too far, calibration only masks it and the sensor needs replacing. We measure the cavity temperature against the setpoint before deciding which it is.
Self-clean and the door lock
Self-clean is the single most common cause of an oven that dies without warning. The cycle runs the cavity to roughly 900 degrees. That heat kills thermal fuses, cooks door lock motors, and stresses control boards. A large share of “my oven worked yesterday and is dead today” calls trace back to a self-clean cycle run the night before.
Two outcomes we see repeatedly:
- The door will not unlock after the cycle. Sometimes the oven simply has not cooled enough and needs a few more hours. If the lock motor or its switch failed, it will not release at any temperature, and forcing it breaks the mechanism and often the door.
- The oven is completely dead after self-clean. Usually a blown thermal fuse. Replacing the fuse alone is not the repair. Something made it blow, and if we do not find that, the new fuse goes too.
Control boards
Control boards do fail, but they get blamed far more often than they deserve. A board is one of the most expensive parts in an oven, so it is the wrong place to start guessing. Before we replace one, we confirm the board is getting correct input and failing to send correct output. Error codes, dead touchpads, and displays that light up randomly are frequently a failed touch membrane or a wiring fault in front of a perfectly healthy board.

What moves the number:

- How hard the part is to reach. A wall oven built into cabinetry takes more labor than a freestanding range you can pull forward.

If you smell gas, do not touch the oven. Leave the house, then call your gas utility from outside. If there is no gas smell and the oven simply will not ignite, the igniter is the most likely cause and it is a routine repair for us. Do not try to light a gas oven with a match. The safety valve is designed to stay closed, and bypassing it is dangerous.
No. This is the most misunderstood failure in gas ovens. The igniter has to draw enough electrical current to open the gas safety valve, and a worn igniter still glows while drawing too little. If it glows for more than about 90 seconds with no flame, the igniter is failing and needs replacing.
Common causes are a failed bake element with the broil element still working, a convection fan that has stopped turning, a door that no longer seals because the gasket or hinges are worn, or a drifted temperature sensor. We check the door seal and the sensor first, since those are the cheapest to correct.
