Built to Serve. Engineered to Last
Commercial refrigeration repair covers the cold equipment a food business runs on: walk-ins, reach-ins, prep tables, display cases, and ice machines. Alpha Solutions self-performs this work with our own technicians across Whatcom, Skagit, Island, and Snohomish Counties. We schedule by product risk, so failures with inventory on the line come first.

Refrigeration failure in a food business is an inventory problem before it is a repair problem. The invoice for the part is rarely the expensive half of the day.
There is a second cost that operators feel later. Washington’s retail food rules set the cold-holding standards your inspector works from. You can read them in the state’s food safety rules and regulations. Equipment that cannot hold those temperatures is a risk every day it stays in service, whether or not anything spoils.
We handle this line ourselves. Commercial refrigeration is self-performed by Alpha technicians, not handed off.
Walk-In Coolers and Freezers
Walk-ins are the largest equipment in most kitchens, and the highest stakes. They also fail in their own ways: door gaskets and closers, evaporator icing, defrost timers and termination sensors, condensate drains, condensing units, and refrigerant leaks.
Because there is that much to cover, walk-ins have a dedicated page rather than a paragraph here.
See how we handle walk-in cooler and freezer repair for the full detail, including emergency response when product is at risk.
Reach-In Coolers and Freezers
Reach-ins take more abuse than any other box in the kitchen. Doors open constantly, they sit in a hot line, and their condensers pull in grease and dust from the air around them.
Most reach-in calls come down to airflow and doors. A condenser packed with kitchen grease cannot reject heat, so the unit runs nonstop and still drifts warm. Gaskets and self-closing hinges fail from sheer cycle count. Inside, overloading the shelves blocks the airflow the unit needs to hold temperature evenly, which is why one shelf reads fine and another does not.
We diagnose and repair the whole unit: condenser and evaporator, fan motors, thermostats and controls, defrost, drains, doors, gaskets, and hinges.
Prep Tables and Sandwich Units
Prep tables have a specific weakness: the pan well sits open to the room during service. The unit is fighting warm kitchen air across the top while trying to hold food safe below.
That is why the most common prep-table complaint is temperature that holds overnight and climbs during the rush. The equipment may be working correctly and still lose the fight against a hot line, pans left uncovered, or product loaded warm. Real faults show up as a unit that cannot recover after service ends, ice in the well, or a base section that no longer holds.
We service the refrigeration side, the controls, and the doors and drawers underneath, and we will tell you honestly when the problem is the equipment versus how the station is being run.
Display Cases and Merchandisers
Display cases sell product, which makes their failures visible to customers as well as expensive. Open-air cases and glass-door merchandisers each have their own issues: fogging or sweating glass, door heaters, lighting, fan motors, condensate drains, and controls.
Two things matter most on cases. Airflow, because a case loaded past the load line stops holding temperature no matter how well the refrigeration is running. And drains, because a case that will not clear condensate ends up with water on the floor and ice in the base.
Ice Machines
Ice is a food product, and health inspectors treat ice machines accordingly. Common failures are scale buildup on the evaporator, water filtration that never got changed, water inlet and float problems, drain issues, and harvest cycles that stall so the machine makes a partial batch or none.
Preventive Maintenance
Most of the emergency calls we run were preventable, and the prevention was usually cleaning a condenser coil.
A maintenance visit covers the basics that keep a box alive. We clean the condenser and evaporator. We check the refrigerant charge for signs of a leak. We verify defrost, clear the drains, and inspect doors and gaskets. We check the controls and the temperature settings, then confirm each unit holds where it should.
It is scheduled work. It happens during hours you choose. And it costs less than one product loss.
Systems and Equipment We Work With
- Walk-in coolers and freezers — see the walk-in repair page
- Reach-in coolers, freezers, and refrigerated merchandisers
- Prep tables, sandwich units, and pizza prep stations
- Refrigerated display cases, open-air and glass-door
- Under-counter and back-bar refrigeration
- Ice machines, bins, and dispensers
- Self-contained and remote condensing units
- Refrigeration controls, thermostats, and temperature monitoring
The Advantages of Professional Commercial Refrigeration Service
Less product loss. Equipment caught while it is drifting costs a service call. Equipment caught after it fails costs the inventory too.
Compliance you can document. Equipment that holds temperature, plus a service record that shows it, is what you want when an inspector is standing in your kitchen.
One contractor for the whole kitchen. We also cover the heating and cooling equipment that keeps a commercial kitchen workable, so one company knows your building.
Refrigerant handled to federal rules. Refrigerant work in stationary equipment is regulated under EPA Section 608, which governs recovery, leak repair, and venting.
Our Commercial Refrigeration Process
Schedule Your Repair
Tell us what unit is down, what is in it, and when it started. We triage by product risk. You will know when a technician is coming.
Root-Cause Diagnosis
We check the system rather than the symptom: airflow, condenser, evaporator, defrost, drains, doors, charge, and controls. A warm box has several possible causes, and the difference between them is the difference between a fix and a repeat visit.
Professional Repair
You get told what failed, what it costs, and what the options are before work starts. When replacement beats another repair, we say so.
Test, Verify, and Safety Check
We confirm the unit pulls down and holds temperature, verify the drain clears, check that doors seal, and confirm the controls are set correctly. Then we tell you what we saw and what to watch.
Commercial Refrigeration Costs
We quote before we work. Nothing gets repaired on a number you have not approved. What drives the quote:
- Equipment size and type. An under-counter unit and a multi-box rack system are different scopes entirely.
- Which part failed. Door and control work is the simplest category. Refrigerant leaks and compressor work are the heaviest.
- Access. Roof-mounted and remote condensing units take longer to reach than a unit sitting in the kitchen.
- How many units are involved. For a site with several boxes, we walk the equipment and quote it together, which is usually cheaper than calling us out three separate times.

Commercial Refrigeration — Frequently Asked Questions
The cold equipment a food business runs on: walk-in coolers and freezers, reach-ins, prep tables and sandwich units, display cases and merchandisers, under-counter and back-bar units, and ice machines. Home refrigerators are a different line — that is residential refrigerator and freezer repair.
The whole line. Walk-ins get their own page because there is more to cover, but reach-ins, prep tables, display cases, and under-counter units are all standard work for us.
Equipment size drives the number more than anything else, followed by which part failed. We quote before we start, and if you have several units needing attention, we will look at them together instead of billing separate trips.
Maybe not. A prep table with its well open to a hot kitchen line is fighting warm air all shift. Uncovered pans and product loaded warm make it worse. A genuine fault looks different: the unit cannot recover after service ends, or the base section stops holding. We will tell you which one you have.
Higher-use equipment needs attention more often than most operators schedule it. Condenser cleaning is the single highest-value item, especially for units sitting in a greasy kitchen.
We do. Refrigerant work in stationary refrigeration is regulated federally under EPA Section 608, which covers recovery, leak repair, and venting, and we have technicians who hold that certification. A system that is low on refrigerant has a leak, so we find and repair it rather than topping it off.
Yes. Kitchens are hard on cooling equipment, and many of our commercial customers use us for both. See HVAC services.
Yes. We service commercial refrigeration and residential appliances, which matters for owners with a restaurant and a rental property, or a live-in operation.
